Blei, made in 1994, is one of a series of flat sculptures. The title Blei is the German word for lead, and a false cognate of the Dutch word “blij”, meaning happy. It consists of 3x3x0.2cm parts of solid lead. Carefully arranged and laid out on the floor, the sculpture is heavy enough to effectively be walked over without its pieces being displaced. Blei has the inner shape of an empty window. The lead, having been used in rain gutters before, is corroded by exposure to outdoor weather, creating a wide variety of color shades.
